World Health Mental Health Awareness Day By Joy Wisdom

Mental health concerns are widespread for both adults and children, with increasing rates of probable mental health conditions observed in young people, particularly in UK. Rates of mental disorders in children (aged 8-16) rose from 1 in 8 in 2017 to over 1 in 6 by 2023, while adult access to mental health treatment in England has also doubled in the same period. Data indicates 1 in 4 adults are living with a mental health condition. Of course the underlying factors of anxiety and low depression is often not included in these figures as not prescribed or collected data.

Our modern world of communication has impacted society greatly. We live different factors to our grandparents day. Burnout and mental health challenges include socioeconomic pressures, IT and media communication bombardment, school overload, family dynamics, and little access to support services. Mental health issues are underestimated and the pharmaceutical approach seen as an aid. However often contributing its own contraindicators slowing individual recovery. The picture of mental health has many facets and are individual to each person. The antidepressant cost is alarming and unsustainable economically.

Mental ill-health is now one of the UK’s biggest hidden costs, draining an estimated £117.9 billion a year through lost productivity, absenteeism and healthcare demands. Recent data shows 1 in 4 adults live with a mental health condition and 8.7 million patients were prescribed antidepressants in England in 2023 at a cost of nearly £220 million.

But the impact doesn’t stop at the office door. Stress carried home undermines relationships and directly affects children’s mental health, creating ripple effects across generations. Research shows young people in stressed households are significantly more likely to develop anxiety, depression, or behavioural disorders themselves. And the biggest elephant in the room is we pass it on to our children! Hence the growing instance of mental health in children and teens unable to cope with the lifestyle pressures of parents and schools!
