Obesity & depression by Joy Wisdom

It's official, Obesity, being overweight is linked to depression!

Depression is at epidemic proportions, and involved from emotional vulnerabilities,  lifestyle and relationships including our relationship with our selves.

Australian researchers say they have the strongest evidence, yet that obesity is one trigger of depression. Pointing to psychological rather than physiological problems causing depression. Women suffer more than men with this psychological issue, causing low mood and disappointment in self.

  • Logically women also have hormonal influences in middle years, with menopause that can change shape and put weight on.
  • Taking hormonal medication (HRT) a contraindicator for some women who can also increase weight. (As it did for me putting on two stone in a very short space of time).
  • Hormonal changes also cause emotional impacts, with anxiety and depression in women in Perimenopause, menopause etc.

There is a much bigger picture to depression and could have been underlying for years, when menopause starts, rug is pulled and adrenal overload is highlighted, and depressive symptoms caused by hormonal imbalances are felt.

Interestingly researchers saw similar links in males who are slim, finding this group are more prone to depression than people of normal weight.  Source: Int.J.Epidemiol, 2018 Nov13
