Ancients had back issues too! by Joy Wisdom

Having a bad back and stiff neck is not new for office workers.

Back issues remain from poor diet and posture, degeneration of bones can be passed on through generations.

A new study has indicated that ancient Egyptian scribes also suffered skeletal issues. Scribes would have been highly prized and given social status. Lived privileged lives. However it did not stop skeletal disorders forming.

  1. Modern skeletal analysis on scribes remains, showed they would have been prone to shoulder and spine degeneration.
  2. Osteoarthritis identified in right thumb. Thought to be caused by pinching the thin reed pens that scribes were known to have used.
  3. Changes in jaw position has been put down to individuals chewing pens.
  4. Other skeletal damage was thought to have the result of squatting or crouching position, head bent that scribes favoured.

I wonder what the results of computer age will be, it seems we have many of the same outcomes thousands of years later.

We know Bone degeneration happens with poor diet.

Lack of Essential fatty acids.

Vitamin D absorption opens pathways for calcium absorption

Digestive malabsorption issues cause lack of vitamin and mineral integration

Dehydration depletes bone strength causing skin and bone disorders.

Even in the 21st centuary we are still living poor nutrition and water depletion, little understanding or appreciation of body needs.
